January - Chippokes State Park - Jones-Stewart Mansion Tours. The Jones-Stewart Mansion will be open. providing a perfect follow-up activity after one of the First Day Hikes. January 1 - First Day Hikes - Join a park interpreter for a leisurely stroll through forests and fields. The hike will take place on the James River Trail and will feature opportunities to witness wildlife and their habitats. It is recommended that participants wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing. Experience four centuries of romance at Bacon’s Castle! Begin your evening with wine tastings from Hampton Roads Winery, paired with regional and historic food recipes inspired by 18th century cookbooks. Get an up-close look at Bacon's Castle’s 1834 love poem etched for eternity in a window pane! Take a special, one night only “Romance” tour of the 1665 Castle where four centuries of romantic tales echo in the very chambers in which they originated. Timeslots are available for 2:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. We have limited space available, so reserve your tickets now. $30 each for Preservation Virginia members and $45 per person for non-members. Chippokes Plantation State Park - February Interpretive Programs. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in real-time through the project's website. Grab your binoculars or cameras and join the flock as we search for birds at Chippokes. Hiking through a variety of natural habitats, we will experience how different birds use the park as a breeding, wintering, and permanent habitat. In accordance with the Great Backyard Bird Count, we will be recording our observations for submission into their website. Some binoculars will be provided. Wear comfortable and warm clothing.

April - Chippokes Plantation Mansion - Friends of Chippokes 18th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at 2pm., Join park staff, volunteers, and, you guessed it, the Easter Bunny, for a fun filled Easter egg-stravaganza at the Paradise Gardens. In addition to the Easter Egg Hunt, we will also have games, arts and crafts, and other activities guaranteed to have you jumping, or hopping, for joy. The age limit for the Easter Egg Hunt is 10 and under, bring your own basket. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Chippokes. The Easter Egg Hunt will start promptly at 2:00 p.m.; it is recommended that visitors wishing to participate in the hunt arrive by that time as eggs are limited. Cost is the $5 vehicle park entrance fee.

June - Chippokes Steam and Gas Engine Show - Start your summer off with a visit to the 29th Annual Steam and Gas Engine Show at Chippokes Plantation State Park taking place June 1-2, 20198. “Hit-n-miss” engines, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display. Enjoy tram rides, tractor pulls, sawmill demonstrations and kid’s activities, including a pedal tractor pull competition. Food and craft vendors will be on hand. Don’t miss this great family event.Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days, and admission is $5.00 per vehicle. July 6 & 7 - Chippokes State Park - Chippokes Plantation "Prelude to Yorktown" - Join us on July 6 & 7, 2019 to help mark the 400th Anniversary of the Chippokes Plantation. The 7th Virginia Regiment reenacting units will be hosting a recreation of the small skirmish that occurred on the old Chippokes Road and the battle of Green Springs on the actual anniversary of those events. Guests will be able to tour the living history camps surrounding the historic Jones-Stewart Mansion, shop in the colonial sutlery camp, enjoy hearth cooking demonstrations in the historic brick kitchen and more.

Camps to open to the public at 9 a.m. and assorted historical programs, including Women of Chippokes, Walnut Valley tours, Chippokes at Play and Quarter Lane by Candlelight, will be offered throughout the weekend. National Public Lands Day is a nationwide event that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to parks in order to get them involved in natural resource conservation. This year we will be behind the scenes preparing some of your favorite attractions for the winter. Join us as we clean up in the: River House, Historic Brick Kitchen, Carriage House, and Farm and Forestry Museum. We'll also have opportunities available to work in the various gardens around the park to help prepare those for the fall/winter as well.

Celebrate the fall harvest at one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the United States. Along with craft and food vendors and live bluegrass music, there will be activities and exhibits which will include hearth cooking, basket weaving, spinning, sack races, corn hole, and antique farming equipment demonstrations. If you want some souvenirs to bring home, channel your creativity with some pumpkin painting or make a scarecrow. Every member of the family will find something to do including riding on an antique tractor-drawn hayride, climbing on a straw fort, or participating in crafts and colonial games, plus much more.
There is no fee for the event, but park entrance fees apply at $7 per vehicle and donations will be accepted for all activities.

Youth Costume Contest, Dog Costume Contest, Trick-or-Treating & Campsite Decorating - Chippokes Plantation State Park, 695 Chippokes Park Rd., Surry, VA 23883. Campground Amphitheater, Loop A, and Loop B.
On this spook-tacular day, youth up to 12 years of age are invited to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume and gather together. A panel of judges will be on hand to select the best costume. Meet at 6 p.m. behind Bathhouse A. If your dog is fond of costumes bring him along too for a Dog Costume Contest at the same time. Campers are invited to decorate their campsites in a fun and ghoulish way and offer candy for the park's trick-or-treaters. You'll get goose bumps as vampires, superheroes, and "ghostbusters" visit the campground. Youth trick-or-treating will take place from 6 - 7 p.m. Campers interested in passing out candy must attach the "pumpkin pass" (located in the camping packet) to the site post at their campsite so trick-or-treaters know who is participating. At 7 p.m., find out if your campsite was voted the best-decorated-site as our panel of judges award a special prize to the winning site. 1st place is 2 days free camping at any Virginia State Park. Campsites that wish to compete must also participate in the trick-or-treating.

Bacon's Castle - Bacon's Rebellion Re-enactment - Were Governor Berkeley and his allies corrupt? How could free indentured servants and poor farmers scratch a living in 1670s Virginia? Learn about both and more from our costumed historical interpreters as members of Bacon's Rebellion under Captain Rookings occupy the "Arthur Allen Brick House" in Surry County. Learn how the events in 1676 and 1677 Virginia led to dramatic trends toward race-based slavery, Virginia Indian relations, and struggles between western and eastern Virginians. Attendance to the day's events is included in general admission to the Historic Site.

November - Nov. 2 - Bacon's Castle - Guy Fawkes Day - Join us at Bacon's Castle for the fourth Annual Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night! Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Food and other items can be purchased from vendors. You may bring blankets and chairs for the day's events.

What is Guy Fawkes Day? - On November 5th, 1605 Catholic and anti-Protestant Guy Fawkes and 12 co-conspirators spent months planning to blow up King James I of England and Parliamentarians, but their assassination attempt was foiled when Fawkes was discovered lurking in a cellar below the House of Lords next to 36 barrels of gunpowder. Londoners immediately began lighting bonfires in celebration that the plot had failed. A few months later Parliament declared "5th of November" a public day of thanksgiving. Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, has been around in one form or another ever since. The evening serves as a pro-establishment/patriotic event for the United Kingdom. In modern times the evening festivities include fireworks, bonfires, and enjoying baked potatoes and hot mulled wine. Effigies of the "Guy" and unpopular political leaders may also be burnt.
